Abu and his pack were beaten with poles. Some of the dogs died, some were left limping, and Abu had his jaw broken. They were beaten because one of the dogs bit someone. Some of the community came together and tortured the dogs for revenge.
Now, everyone with critical thinking or people who have seen the dogs on the streets know that dogs do not bite for no reason. They bite out of fear and left with no choice but to defend. So the problem as usual does not lie with the dog at all.
For a month Abu could not eat or drink, and he was severely dehydrated living on the street. He is also a terrified boy. Abu only feels safe in his bed at the vets. He does not like to be handled outside of his bed, and he really is nervous. It took us two days to catch him.
Abu has had two specialist surgeries to reconstruct his jaw, and for weeks, he was fed through a tube while he recovered. Abut is now drinking and eating, soft food to start with before he learns to chew again. His jaw looks good.
But the mental scars will take longer to heal. Abu is terrified of humans, so scared of being exposed. He’s terrified of being touched, and he doesn’t even like people looking his way. You can wee in his eyes how broken his soul is.
It’s going to be a while before Abu feels safe. Even dogs saved from the black market are not this scared. Whatever this sweet boy endured, that day must have been hell.
But we won’t give up on him.
